Hearth pads and hearth rugs protect floors in front of wood stoves and fireplaces. UL-listed stove boards with the R-values stove manuals require, plus fire-resistant hearth rugs for open fireplaces.
Every wood or pellet stove manual specifies the floor protection it needs – a minimum size and, for many stoves, a minimum R-value (thermal resistance). A listed hearth pad satisfies that requirement without pouring a masonry hearth, and comes in tile, slate, stone and steel finishes to suit the room. Hearth rugs are a different product: a fire-resistant wool or fiberglass rug that sits in front of an open fireplace to catch sparks and embers.
Find the floor-protection requirement in your stove manual (for example “ember protection only” or “R-value 1.0”), then choose a pad with equal or greater R-value and dimensions that extend the required distance in front of and beside the stove – typically 16" in front and 8" on the sides in the U.S. Corner pads are made for diagonal installations.
