The Aspen is what you specify when the fireplace is the architecture. A 60" x 38" opening is close to the largest wood-burning firebox you can put in a house, and Empire has taken pains to make sure nothing distracts from it: the air control is hidden, there is no visible smoke shelf, and the liner runs to the full extent of the chamber with no exposed metal anywhere in the field of view.
That last detail is the one installers notice. On most large fireboxes you see a band of firebox steel above the brick. Here you do not, which is why the Aspen photographs the way it does.
Both share the same 60" x 38" opening and the same price, and both frame 30½" deep. What differs is the proportion of the surround:
The Aspen ships as a firebox shell and must be finished with either a smooth brick set or firebrick. They give quite different results:
Firebrick in buff or red is also the least expensive way to finish the firebox by a wide margin, if budget matters more than the modern look.
