Product Description

A wood stove that does not look like a wood stove

Most freestanding stoves are unapologetically traditional — cast iron, curved legs, ornamental doors. That is exactly right in an old farmhouse and exactly wrong in a room with flat-panel cabinetry and square trim. The Inspire 2000 is Osburn's answer: squared-off geometry and a steel-framed door, with none of the Victorian detailing.

It is a genuine heater, not a decorative box. A 2.4 cubic foot firebox takes a real load of cordwood and will hold a fire through an evening comfortably.

Works on a short chimney

The specification that quietly decides many installations: the Inspire 2000 needs only 12 ft of chimney height, where the larger Osburn 3500 wants 15 ft. Single-storey houses, ranch layouts and additions often cannot reach 15 ft without an unsightly extension above the roofline.

It vents on a 6" flue, Class A to CAN/ULC S629 or UL 103 HT (2100 °F).

Where it sits in the range, honestly

The Inspire runs at 2.3 g/h of particulate. That is EPA approved and dramatically cleaner than any pre-2000 stove, but it is not the cleanest Osburn makes — the 3500 manages 1.6 g/h with a much bigger firebox. If lowest possible emissions and minimum creosote are your priorities and you have the chimney height for it, the 3500 is the better burner.

Choose the Inspire for the look, the footprint, and the shorter chimney requirement. Those are good reasons; we just would rather you choose it for the right ones.

Non-catalytic combustion — nothing to replace on a schedule.

FAQs

Q: Can I remove the legs or pedestal of my stove and convert it into a fireplace insert?

A: Unfortunately, there is a major design difference between a freestanding wood stove and a wood insert. The wood insert (like all other inserts) has an extra steel jacket that covers about 2/3 of its firebox on the sides and all of its back. This serves to accumulate the heat radiated by the firebox. The heat is then pushed in front of the unit and into the room by a blower. Without this feature, the heat radiated by the insert would be lost into the masonry cavity. Hence, a stove inserted into a masonry fireplace would not have the same efficiency. Furthermore, its clearances to combustible materials could vary. If the stove has not been tested for this type of installation, it cannot be inserted into a masonry opening.

Q: What makes a heater mobile-home approved?

A: Mobile-home approved stoves have gone through specific testing to show that they can source their combustion air entirely from outside the house. This is required because mobile homes (or manufactured homes) are often very airtight. Should there be a lack of combustion air, harmful levels of CO (carbon monoxide) could accumulate in the house. This is why mobile-home approved stoves have an adapter that hooks-up to the unit and connects to a fresh air intake on the outside wall of the house through an insulated pipe.
