Product Description

Pedestal base, cast iron door, narrow footprint

The Matrix is the traditional counterpart to the Inspire: same 2.4 cubic foot firebox, but with a cast iron door frame and a pedestal base rather than legs. The pedestal is the practical difference. It gives a cleaner sweep underneath — nowhere for ash and kindling to collect — and it reads as more substantial in a room with a stone or tile hearth.

At 27⅛" wide and 25" deep it is also the most compact full-size stove in the Osburn range. Where the Inspire and 3500 are 33½" deep, the Matrix pulls in eight inches, which matters against a wall with limited clearance or in a corner install.

Blower included

A blower comes fitted. On a stove of this size it makes the difference between heating the room the stove is in and pushing warmth down a hallway. Worth having, and worth knowing it is not an upcharge here.

Chimney requirements

  • 6" flue
  • Minimum 12 ft chimney height — workable on single-storey homes
  • Class A to CAN/ULC S629 or UL 103 HT (2100 °F)

Straight about the emissions

The Matrix burns at 2.3 g/h of particulate — EPA approved, far cleaner than any older stove, but the same figure as the Inspire and higher than the 3500's 1.6 g/h. You are choosing the Matrix for the cast iron look, the pedestal, and the compact footprint. Those are legitimate reasons. If minimum creosote is the priority and you have 15 ft of chimney, the 3500 burns cleaner.

Non-catalytic — no combustor to replace.

FAQs

Q: Can I cook on the top of my wood stove?

A: It is definitely possible to cook on the top of your stove. This can be very useful in case of power failure. A stove fully loaded with wood will easily reach 500 to 700 °F on top. This is sufficient to cook. The use of a pan or other cookware may scratch the paint. An option is to use a cast iron cooking grid or simply lay a piece of stainless steel on top of the stove.

Q: Can I vent my heater using an existing masonry chimney?

A: It is possible to install a heater using your existing masonry chimney. The chimney must comply with the building code of your country, state or province. It usually needs to be lined with refractory bricks, metal, or clay tiles sealed together with fire cement. The diameter of the chimney must be the same as the appliance's flue outlet. If your masonry chimney does not have the same diameter as the appliance's flue outlet, you need to insert a stainless steel liner having the proper diameter. Otherwise, you may face draft problems. There are two types of liners: rigid and flexible liner. Both types are made of stainless steel. They must be certified for venting solid-fuel burning appliances. Flexible liner is particularly useful when the masonry chimney has one or more deviations.
