Napoleon Ascent 42" Traditional Direct Vent Gas Fireplace
The Napoleon Ascent 42" is a 42-1/2"-wide built-in direct vent gas fireplace with a traditional look: a split oak PHAZER log set with glowing embers is included, along with the safety barrier screen and, on electronic-ignition models, a battery back-up for the control, at 22,000 BTU/hr on natural gas or propane with electronic or millivolt (standing pilot) ignition — from $3,039. It vents top or rear on 4" / 7" pipe, frames into a 42-1/2" wide by 18-9/16" deep opening, and carries Napoleon's President's Lifetime Limited Warranty.
Choose the 42" if you want a log fire in a living room: its framed opening is just 18-9/16" deep, it is approved for bedrooms and bathrooms and certified for mobile homes, and can be dressed up with porcelain or brick interior panels, decorative fronts and finishing trims.
It is not right for you if you want a contemporary linear flame. The Ascent is a classic log fire you can dress up with MIRRO-FLAME porcelain panels, decorative fronts and finishing trims.
Specifications
The framed opening is 42-1/2" wide, 35" high and 18-9/16" deep; the fireplace itself measures 42" wide, 34-5/8" high and 18-5/16" deep, with a 37-11/16" by 23-11/16" viewing area. The enclosure needs at least 50-1/2" of height for a top-vent installation or 41-5/8" for rear venting. The face is finished in non-combustible material that may stand out up to 4" from the door. Mantel clearances depend on the mantel's depth and are charted on page 51 of the installation manual. The vent pipe needs 3" above and 1" at the sides of horizontal runs and 1" around vertical runs, and the fireplace takes a 1/2" gas line with a flex connector (3/8" without one).

All four Ascent sizes share the split oak PHAZER log set, the safety barrier and the 4" / 7" top or rear vent, with a battery back-up on the electronic control. The 42" runs 22,000 BTU/hr in a 42-1/2" wide, 18-9/16" deep framed opening, from $3,039; the 46" has the same rating in a 46-1/2" opening, from $3,149, while the 30" (15,000 BTU/hr) and 36" (18,000 BTU/hr) are from $2,729 and from $2,939.

Answers to common questions
What venting does the Ascent 42" need?
It is a direct vent fireplace on a 4" exhaust / 7" air-intake pipe that leaves the top or the rear of the unit, run out through a wall or up through the roof: up to 20 ft horizontally and up to 40 ft vertically. Use one maker's components throughout and do not mix rigid and flexible pipe. The vent run and termination are ordered separately and sized to your installation, and the outside terminal clearances are listed on page 14 of the installation manual.

Will it heat my room?
No — the Ascent 42" is certified as a decorative gas appliance, not a source of heat. It is rated 22,000 BTU/hr input, and the optional AUB blower kit adds a variable-speed, thermostatically controlled blower; the optional Hot Air Distribution Kit can move warm air to another room through flexible ducting.
Where can it be installed?
Indoors, including bedrooms, bathrooms and bed-sitting rooms, and it is approved for mobile and manufactured homes where local codes allow (fastened in place). It is rated to 4,500 ft, with the input reduced above that. Keep furniture and other objects at least 48" from the front, and do not run it below freezing. What gas and electrical connections does it need?
A natural gas or propane line to the fireplace's manual shut-off valve (1/2" if it is fitted with a flex connector, 3/8" without one) — natural gas at 4.5" to 7" w.c. inlet pressure, propane at 11" to 13" w.c.. An electronic model takes a 115 V supply through its transformer, with a 4 AA battery back-up for outages; a millivolt model needs no external electricity. Natural gas and propane are separate factory models, and a certified Napoleon kit converts between them.
Does buying from The Torch Guys affect my Napoleon warranty?
No. The firebox, burner, PHAZER logs and embers and the ceramic glass (against heat breakage) are covered for as long as you own the fireplace — parts free for the first 10 years, then at half of retail; blowers, valves, remotes and other electrical parts and the labour are covered for the first year. Coverage starts on the installation date.
